For the Dominican Sisters in Iraq
During Mass on Holy Thursday there will be a Special Collection for the Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine of Siena in Iraq.
By way of background, two years ago this coming August, the Dominican Sisters of St. Siena and many hundreds of their fellow Christians had to flee their homes in Qaraqosh, Iraq (and neighboring villages) when the invading ISIS force approached their town. With little more than what they could carry, the Sisters and the townspeople had to escape for their lives.
Living now in Iraqi Kurdistan, the Sisters and the towns people are trying to rebuild their lives, realizing that it is highly unlikely that they and other religious minorities will be able to return to their ancestral homes in the foreseeable future. With the help of Dominican Sisters and Friars elsewhere in the world along with the Pontifical Mission and others, the Sisters in Iraq are a key part of this rebuilding.
By distributing essentials such as blankets, mattresses, shoes, diapers, water coolers, and a whole host of other needed materials, the Sisters have played a role in restoring hope among the displaced peoples. In addition, the Sisters are starting primary school and religious education classes.
