2012 Home Repairs with Christmas in Action
Nearly forty members of St. Francis of Assisi improved the lives of three homeowners and their families by participating in the Christmas in Action “Day of Action” on Saturday, April 28th, 2012, and rehabilitating three homes in Ypsilanti Township.
Christmas in Action is a national nonprofit organization with the mission of preserving safe and affordable housing for low-income, elderly and physically-challenged homeowners by bringing together volunteers, building professionals and donated materials to repair and rehabilitate the homes. This work is provided at no cost to the homeowners. Nationwide, hundreds of homes were renovated in dozens of locations this year.
A senior’s home was made much brighter by a crew that completely replaced the kitchen cabinet, counter, and sink, and with the repair of the living room wall. The home will be warmer next winter with repairs to the front window and back door. In the yard, the entire front lawn, which had been torn up for a sewer line repair, was weeded, leveled and reseeded just in time of for the rain. And the yard was brightened by the efforts of the landscaping crew, who cleared trees and bushes and turned an empty flower bed into a beautiful garden that will last for years.
Meanwhile, at the home of a senior who raises her grandchildren, a dedicated group of volunteers completed several major projects. A leaky toilet and looser counter top were replaced, along with some precise replacement of broken floor tiles. Also, and doing amazing work to repair cabinet door and door jams to allow installation of door knobs.
In the third house, another group improved the peace of mind of the homeowner by repairing leaks and holes in the basement walls.
Finally, a dedicated team of efficient food crew of 15 parish members prepared and packed breakfast and lunch for ALL the Christmas in Action volunteers in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. All of the volunteers were grateful for the food and snacks during a busy Saturday.
Congratulations and thanks go out to everyone who so generously gave their time and talents to this great cause. See: christmasinactionsemi.org Special thanks to our Action Day coordinator: Brian O'Neil, our house leader, Jim Wiseman, our food purchaser/preparation leader: Linda Wiseman, and …
